The Basic Law for A Gender Equal Society (1999)
(Taken from the Japanese Headquarters for the Promotion of Gender Equality website; for full text, please see www.gender.go.jp)1Chapter 1 General Provisions Article 1 In consideration of the urgency of realizing an affluent and dynamic society in which the human rights of both women and men are respected and which can respond to changes in socioeconomic circumstances, the purpose of this law is to comprehensively and systematically promote formation of a Gender-equal Society by laying out the basic principles in regard to formation of such a society, clarifying the responsibilities of the State and local governments and citizens, and also stipulating provisions to form the basis of policies related to promotion of formation of a Gender-equal Society.
Law for Punishing Acts Related to Child Prostitution and Child Pornography, and for Protecting Children
(Taken verbatim from the Japanese Ministry of Justice website) Article 1 - Objective The objective of this Law is to protect the rights of children by prescribing punishment for acts related to child prostitution and child pornography, and by establishing measures including the giving of appropriate protection to children who have suffered hysically and/or mentally from the said acts, in light of the fact that sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children seriously infringe upon the human rights of children.

Supplementary Provisions Article 1 Effective date This Law shall come into force on the date to be specified by a Cabinet Order within the scope not exceeding six months counting from the ate of its promulgation .
