Activities

With offices in Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam, UNIAP is committed to building a united front against human trafficking, and taking actions based on the needs of each country.

UNIAP Lao PDR works in four core areas:

  • Building the knowledge base on human trafficking
  • Supporting action on high priority areas
  • Targeted interventions that respond to identified gaps
  • Strengthening advocacy on the issue of human trafficking

UNIAP is unique because it works as a coordinating body and service provider, rather than implementing programmes itself. Our approach in supporting and initiating programmes and then stepping back as our partners take them forward, ensures that full-scale responses to human trafficking are implemented by those best placed to do so.

As a service provider, UNIAP Lao PDR provides a platform for action on trafficking. We facilitate closer, more effective working relationships, and act as a catalyst for these relationships to translate into action.

Building the Knowledge Base on Human Trafficking
UNIAP Lao PDR has provided assistance (both technical and financial) towards the establishment of two Anti-Human Trafficking Resource Centers in Vientiane. The first Resource Center is housed within the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (MLSW) and the second is located in the Central Library on the National University of Laos, Dong Dok Campus. UNIAP Lao PDR is also currently supporting the University of Laos, Dong Dok Campus in its efforts to set up Information Boards about Human Trafficking in Vientiane. The new Information Boards will be located at the Faculty of Law and Politics at the University of Laos, and at two Secondary Schools in Vientiane.

UNIAP Lao PDR is currently working with NGO partners on a media education project, whose main objective is to increase the knowledge of radio, print and television journalists on human trafficking issues. A secondary objective of this project is to increase the quantity and quality of human trafficking information and stories in local newspapers, on the radio and television. As a part of this project, UNIAP along with the MLSW, Norwegian Church Aid (NCA), and World Vision are co-funding a trafficking prevention radio programme targeted at youth. The goal of this project is to raise the awareness of Lao youth about the dangers of illegal migration, and how to avoid trafficking situations.

UNIAP Lao PDR is one of the central sources for information about the human trafficking phenomenon within the country. The UNIAP Lao PDR website also houses an online library of downloadable information, education and communications materials about human trafficking in Lao. UNIAP Lao PDR circulates a weekly e-News Digest to its partners, which reports on recent national and regional developments in human trafficking, and also circulates a quarterly Lao-language newsletter to its national partners. UNIAP Lao PDR is also the first point of contact for new projects and partners, and provides current information and referrals to journalists, researchers, etc, interested in learning about human trafficking in Lao PDR.
