The aim of the AFESIP Lao PDR program is to support repatriation from countries where Lao women have been trafficked (mostly Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore) and to provide vital grass roots support to victims of trafficking for sexual exploitation
In Vientiane in 2006 and in Savanakhet in 2007, plans are in place to open rehabilitation centres to provide comprehensive care to victims in the areas of information, crisis support, health services, legal advice, counseling, education and vocational training.
The social outreach teams will target women and girls in the entertainment sector in Vientiane capital, Savanakhet, Pakse cities and one province capital in the North (to be determined) in 2006, undertaking trafficking prevention and awareness on HIV-AIDS and STD. They will also bring information concerning AFESIP comprehensive services and encourage women to leave places of prostitution and to use AFESIP services. In coordination with the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the teams that include peer educators will play a crucial role in providing direct assistance to sexually exploited women and girls and promotion of children and women rights.
AFESIP Lao also keep close relations with the Lao Anti People Trafficking (LAPTU) from the Ministry of National Security and the National prosecutor in order to provide protection and justice to victims.
AFESIP Laos will play a key role in the repatriation of trafficked victims, to their country of origin, working in close collaboration with the Lao Government (particularly with the ministry Labour and Social Welfare, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs), AFESIP Thailand and local partners in Malaysia and Singapore.
AFESIP Fair Fashion called AFESIP Social Enterprise in Lao will open later in 2006 or early 2007, providing professional training and work opportunities for victims of trafficking, in a similar way to the AFESIP Fair Fashion operation in Cambodia and Vietnam.
