On June 19, 2003, The ICMC/ACILS Counter Trafficking Programme (funded by the US Agency for International Development) hosted a press conference in Jakarta to introduce Ms. Dewi Hughes, the newly appointed National Spokesperson for the Campaign to Eliminate the Trafficking of Indonesian Women and Children. Ms. Hughes, who is the host of the popular television program Mimpi Kali Yee!, will be working with the Ministry of Women's Empowerment to reach out to young women and children most vulnerable in order to educate and inform them of ways to avoid entrapment. The Ministry of Women's Empowerment has been designated by President Megawati Sukarnoputri as the focal point government body to develop and implement government and civil society efforts to counter human trafficking into and out of Indonesia.
The government has enacted a National Plan of Action to combat trafficking and has established a Task Force to lead anti-trafficking efforts. The Minister for Women's Empowerment, Sri Redjeki, has stated that new anti-trafficking legislation that provides strict criminal penalties for traffickers will be submitted to the Indonesian House of People's Representatives (DPR) in near future.
